The Magic of the Scottish Cup

This weekend was all about the most historic trophy in Association Football, the Scottish Cup. It's that time of the year again when everyone from part-timers playing non-league to million pound players at the top set their sights on #DefyingTheOdds come May.

Last year ... and the year before that ... and the year before that, it was Celtic who triumphed in this competition but the 2nd round headlines belong to the likes of Bonnyrigg, Auchinleck and Fort William.

Friday night saw the BBC cameras descend on New Dundas Park for Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic's tie against Buckie Thistle. Excitement had built in the village as the week went on as the media gathered to see the Lowland League leaders take on the Highland League leaders. It was the home side who came out on top 2-0 in front of a full house. Spectacular finishes from Stewart and Hunter meant the fairy-tale could continue for Bonnyrigg with a game against Montrose awaiting them in the next round.

Saturday saw the rest of the games being played in what would be a day full of drama and cup upsets. Auchinleck Talbot, who famously dumped out Ayr United last season, were back making more memories this time around. Talbot were handed a tricky tie against high-flyers, Cove Rangers, but again they produced a heroic upset when Hyslop smashed home the winner two minutes from time. That 1-0 win means that FA Cup winner, Fraser Fyvie, and Canadian internationalist, Fraser Aird, join a list of notable names to receive a humbling by The Bot.

Despite the great stories already mentioned, I have saved my favourite of the weekend till last. Fort William, recently dubbed 'Britain's Worst Football Team', only recently ended their seventy-three (yes - 73!!!) game streak without a win and had the task of coming up against Albion Rovers. They may have finished last season with a goal difference of -224 but that didn't stop them creating their own bit of positive history in Coatbridge. Hasting's goal late on secured an outstanding draw for the club and a replay back in Fort William.

We love the Scottish Cup for all the stories it brings year on year and so far this season, it's doing more of the same. The third round draw has already brought up a few eye-catching ties, none more so than Linlithgow Rose against Falkirk. Nothing beats a totally unique derby that only something as special as the Scottish Cup can bring.
